Originating in 1991 on Queen Street Woollahra, Sydney Australia, where Thomas carried out all aspects of the business himself, Thomas Hamel & Associates has organically and thoughtfully grown over the past thirty years.

As project work demanded, talented designers, draftspersons, architects, project managers and accountants steadily joined the team.

Today the design firm is over 30-strong, boasting a “united nations” of creatives and business minds with backgrounds and experience spanning the US, UK & Europe, Asia and Australia. Projects are equally international as, beyond Australia, Thomas Hamel’s residential work can be found in London, Los Angeles, Telluride, South of France, and anywhere clients have homes!

Our Team

The Thomas Hamel & Associates team comes from all corners of the world and bring a myriad of talents and skills to the organisation. They apply a “classic modernist” aesthetic to residential developments and this exceptional depth of creativity ensures an international relevance in an ever changing interior design environment. While Thomas Hamel & Associates has its own talented team of architects and interior designers, they also closely collaborate with leading creatives, both in Australia and around the world.

Thomas Hamel

Principal

American-born and internationally recognised interior designer Thomas Hamel is at the helm of celebrated Sydney-based design firm, Thomas Hamel & Associates. Crafting his talent in New York City at legendary interior design firm Parish-Hadley, Thomas moved to Australia in 1991 and established his eponymous company Thomas Hamel & Associates.

Thomas’ travels around the world are a continuous source of inspiration and underpin his design ethos. The result is an international, sophisticated style that is truly timeless. “Cross pollination” and “intelligent editing” are the hallmarks of his unique style.

Rather than put too many ideas into a design, Thomas approaches spaces from a curator’s perspective, knowing instinctively what to include and as importantly, what to leave out. Each project responds to a client’s needs, their surrounds and importantly, to the way they live.

Thomas’ work is regularly featured in many of the world’s foremost interior design magazine. His acclaimed book, Residence (published in 2010), showcases many favourite residential projects from around the world.

Georgette Mackay

General Manager

Bringing extensive experience gained in the photographic and publishing sectors in the areas of artists’ rights management, licensing, contract negotiation, and cost estimation, Georgette joined the Thomas Hamel team in October 2012. In her role as General/Business Manager, Georgette, metaphorically speaking, ‘has a finger in every pie’ in her role of daily management of our studio. A day at TH & A might include client liaison, human resources, logistics and finance, and many other situations you would never believe occur regularly in Interior Design. No two days are ever the same and there is never a dull moment when you are so involved in the homes and lives of our clients.

John Ling

Financial Controller

As Financial Controller, John runs the day to day management of all things money whilst overseeing operations of his team of accountants. With over 30 years experience in the finance sector, 14 of them with TH&A, he brings a vast knowledge of all aspects of the financial world. An analytical mind, a keen eye for detail and negotiation skills to beat the band, he is the ideal candidate to 'control the purse strings' for our organisation.
